Remember to turn to the right to close the valve.
The water heater (located in the kitchen) has a red-handled intake valve on the pipe that goes from the wall into the tank. In case of a leak, shut off the water immediately. It looks something like this:
If you smell gas in your apartment, turn off your heater and stove. Open windows. Call PG+E immediately at (800) 743-5000. Then call Max or Jane.
In case of a major emergency, the gas shut-off to the entire building is located on the south side of the building next to the laundry room. A square metal key is attached to the shut-off valve. Turn it 1/4 turn in either direction.
